What
readers are saying about Heartmates...
Your book
was a wonderful resource and support...on a personal level, like having a
friend who just worries about me! Next to the three foot high stack of
heart books (technically oriented) sits the one-inch thick book Heartmates¨
-- they are equal in importance to my eye! -- my husband is reading your
book now to help him see our life from the cardiac spouse point of view --
a double blessing! Sylvia Simpson, Cardiac Spouse -- Simsboro,
Louisiana
Nine years
ago...they wished us good luck and we came home. I went through all the
emotions described in your book from the grief over his loss of health to
despair as he went through depression...but I had to get through it all by
'the seat of my pants' ...with no one to compare notes with or to talk to.
I am so glad someone wrote a book about what it's like so no one will feel
so alone. I am purchasing a copy to put in our church library for other
spouses who need support. Elizabeth Wyatt, Cardiac Spouse --
Excelsior Springs, Missouri
We farm
800 acres and farrow to finish 1200 hogs a year...I could relate to every
word in your book. So many of the thoughts and anger and frustration I
had, I thought were just me and it was comforting to know everyone has
them. I not only had him critically ill in the hospital, but I had to
oversee the farm and livestock work to keep the farming going...Your book
has been a great help to me. Thanks for writing it. Sandra Spinler,
Cardiac Spouse -- Morristown, Minnesota
I have
read and reread this book, and it has been of great value and comfort to
me...I am a graduate social worker and a counselor...at the battered woman
shelter, and find it difficult to understand why I have such problems
dealing with this. Carolyn K. Young, Cardiac Spouse -- Dayton,
Ohio
Your book
is so perceptive that I referred to it on many occasions, and it has
always helped me. Esther Blumenthal, Cardiac Spouse -- Chicago,
Illinois
We have
your book and found it very comforting as well as enlightening. I even
sent a copy to my mother another 'Heartmate' (my father had bypass surgery
two months ago). Suzanne Baizerman, Cardiac Spouse & Cardiac
Kid -- St. Paul, Minnesota
Your book
was a great source of reassurance and comfort, knowing that what I was
feeling and what we were experiencing as a couple was not unique, and that
things would become less painful. We are adjusting pretty well, trying to
give ourselves the time that we both need. We are hopeful about having a
child, openly discussing our fears and our dreams together. Robin
Moses, Cardiac Spouse -- Langhorne, Pennsylvania
I am writing to tell you that you have probably saved my life...and I will
be eternally grateful to you....My husband had a major heart attack five
years ago....I realized that I have recovered. FINALLY, someone understood
and I was not going crazy!! You have no idea the relief that it brought. I
cried and cried and it was the first real cry in five years and it was for
ME. Finally I am allowed to have a life. I am allowed to be angry, etc.
But most important, I AM NORMAL! WHAT A CHANGE THE BOOK HAS MADE IN MY
LIFE. Marjorie G. Fowle, Cardiac Spouse -- Kitimat, British
Columbia, Canada
Seven
months ago when my husband suffered his first heart attack, I felt a sense
of 'aloneness' as never before in my life. Your book, Heartmates¨,
helped explain what was happening to me, it gave me permission and
opportunity to cry and feel some grief about what was occurring, and
encouraged me to remember that I was still important enough to think
about....Friends and relatives, while meaning only the best, simply don't
understand the needs of a spouse going through this experience. Susan
Melcer, Cardiac Spouse -- Shoken, New York
I don't
usually read self-help books...I need someone to talk to, someone to be
here with me...I'll read as much as I can, but I don't think this is the
answer. To my delight and surprise, I couldn't put it down. It was easy to
read and I thoroughly believed the book was written for me, and I had a
sense of community with all others who had been there before me. Heartmates¨
was like a guardian angel sent to me at a critical time for me and my
family.
Jan Gibbs, Cardiac Spouse -- Mill Valley, California
